Tree species growth response to climate in mixtures of Quercus robur/Quercus petraea and Pinus sylvestris across Europe - a dynamic, sensitive equilibrium

چکیده

Quercus robur/Quercus petraea and Pinus sylvestris are widely distributed economically important tree species in Europe co-occurring on mesotrophic, xeric mesic sites. Increasing dry conditions may reduce their growth, but growth reductions be modified by mixture, competition site conditions. The annual diameter monospecific mixed stands along an ecological gradient with mean temperatures ranging from 5.5 °C to 11.5 was investigated this study. On 36 triplets (108 plots), trees were cored the year-ring series cross-dated, resulting of 785 804 for Q. spp. P. sylvestris, respectively. A generalized additive model a logarithmic link fit data random effects intercept at triplet, year level slope covariate age each tree; Tweedie-distribution used. final explained 87 % total variation increment both species. Significant covariates age, climate variables (long-term mean, monthly), local variables, relative dbh, stand structure interactions thereof. Tree declined density increased social position. It positively influenced mixture structural diversity (Gini coefficient); significant only. influence potential evapotranspiration (PET) spring autumn positive non-linear, whereas sharply decreased increasing PET June, which proved most influential month whole gradient. Interactions position (relative dbh) July September April sylvestris. or not significant. Climatic found agree well previous results intra-annual studies indicate that captures causal factors well. Furthermore, interaction between dbh might longer duration higher classes. Analysis across time space showed highly dynamic patterns, competitive advantages changing annually spatial patterns showing no large-scale trends pointing prevalence factors. In mixed-species stands, have same competitivity long-term, is year. Climate warming will shift advantages, direction site-specific.

Adaptive and plastic responses of Quercus petraea populations to climate across Europe.

How temperate forests will respond to climate change is uncertain; projections range from severe decline to increased growth. We conducted field tests of sessile oak (Quercus petraea), a widespread keystone European forest tree species, including more than 150 000 trees sourced from 116 geographically diverse populations. The tests were planted on 23 field sites in six European countries, in or...

Comparing the intra-annual wood formation of three European species (Fagus sylvatica, Quercus petraea and Pinus sylvestris) as related to leaf phenology and non-structural carbohydrate dynamics.

Monitoring cambial phenology and intra-annual growth dynamics is a useful approach for characterizing the tree growth response to climate change. However, there have been few reports concerning intra-annual wood formation in lowland temperate forests with high time resolution, especially for the comparison between deciduous and coniferous species. The main objective of this study was to determi...

Tree-ring Growth and Wood Chemistry Response to Manipulated Precipitation Variation for Two Temperate Quercus Species

We examined the relationship among ambient and manipulated precipitation, wood chemistry, and their relationship with radial growth for two oak species in eastern Tennessee. The study took place on the Walker Branch Throughfall Displacement Experiment (TDE) site, located at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN. Two dominant species, white oak (Quercus alba) and chestnut oak (Querc...

Growth Response of Drought-Stressed Pinus sylvestris Seedlings to Single- and Multi-Species Inoculation with Ectomycorrhizal Fungi

Many trees species form symbiotic associations with ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi, which improve nutrient and water acquisition of their host. Until now it is unclear whether the species richness of ECM fungi is beneficial for tree seedling performance, be it during moist conditions or drought. We performed a pot experiment using Pinus sylvestris seedlings inoculated with four selected ECM fungi ...

Allocation of Above-ground Growth in Pinus sylvestris – Impacts of Tree Size and Competition

The effect of tree age, size and competition on above ground growth allocation was studied with 69 Pinus sylvestris trees. Competition was described by tree-level indicators (needle density, crown ratio and height-diameter ratio). The stem, branch and needle growth were determined by stem and branch radial increments and tree level biomass analysis. Combined growth of compartments was strongly ...
